Board and Batten Wainscoting in Lancaster, Ohio
A Classic Board and Batten Update for a Lancaster Dining Room
When we updated our own home in Lancaster, Ohio, we wanted to add more character and architectural detail to our dining room without completely changing the space. The result was a simple but noticeable transformation that gave the dining room a more finished, custom feel.

The Project
The dining room had a simple painted wall finish, but the space was missing some of the architectural detail we wanted. Rather than taking on a major renovation, we focused on a few changes that would have the biggest visual impact.
We installed board and batten wainscoting around the dining room and finished the lower portion in white while keeping the existing wall color above. We also replaced the existing dining room light fixture with a new fixture that better complemented the updated space.

White Board and Batten with Contrasting Wall Color
We chose white for the board and batten wainscoting and kept the existing wall color above it. The combination created a clean two-tone look that added definition to the dining room without making the space feel overly busy.
The white trim also provides contrast against the wall color and emphasizes the architectural lines of the board and batten design.
Updating the Dining Room Light Fixture
To complete the transformation, we also replaced the existing dining room light fixture. Changing a light fixture can be a relatively simple update, but it can have a significant impact on the overall look of a room.
The new fixture helped tie the updated dining room together with the new wainscoting and provided another opportunity to add character to the space.
The Key Is in the Layout and Finishing
Board and batten wainscoting can completely change the appearance of a room without requiring a major renovation. Consistent spacing, properly aligned boards, clean corners, and finished seams all contribute to the final appearance. After installation, the trim was filled, caulked, sanded, and painted to create a clean finished look.
A simple dining room transformation: board and batten wainscoting, fresh white trim, the existing wall color, and a new light fixture gave the room more architectural detail and a more finished appearance, without a major remodel.
